NYU School of Medicine/Medical Center Affordable Psychotherapy Affordable psychotherapy for house officers, their spouses and children is being offered through the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY). PANY is composed primarily of graduate psychoanalysts, mainly psychiatrists, but also psychologists and social workers. The majority have received their training at the NYU Psychoanalytic Institute, a component of the Department of Psychiatry of the NYU School of Medicine. Many are former residents and/or current faculty of the department. They are a highly-qualified, well-trained and dedicated group with an allegiance to the medical school and an interest in being of service to young physicians and their families. This affordable psychotherapy program has been developed with the support and approval of the NYU School of Medicine and NYU Langone Medical Center. Since the program's inception in 2000, a considerable number of house staff has found it to be a helpful, private and confidential service. Along with similar programs for medical students and Sackler graduate students, over 250 students and house officers have availed themselves of this affordable treatment program. Insurance Coverage and Fees As the members of PANY are well aware of the financial circumstances of house staff, their services are designed to be affordable for tight budgets. Generally, insurance companies provide some form of mental health benefit to partially cover the cost of treatment for either the house officer or a family member. For house officers on the Tisch Hospital payroll, coverage for psychotherapy is at $50 for each session without any deductible and with no limits on the number of sessions each year. This program is administered by United Health Care. This coverage has been in place since January 1, 2005. For house officers on the Bellevue (HHC) payroll, coverage though CIR is 50% of usual and customary fees up to a set amount and then 80% of usual and customary fees up to $5000 each academic year. Ordinarily there is a deductible and a limit on the number of sessions each year. Approximately half the residents are on Bellevue payroll and the other half are on Tisch payroll. As with any medical treatment, you will be responsible for a co-payment or coinsurance. Please check with your insurance carrier or the House Staff Benefits Office for further details. Affordable psychotherapy means no one will be turned away from recommended psychotherapy because of a fee issue. Your PANY practitioner will work with you to establish an affordable fee after evaluation and a treatment recommendation has been made. The listing of participating members that follows includes practitioner office location, services offered, and contact information. There are members participating in this program throughout the greater New York area, so you will likely be able to find an office location convenient to either work or home.
